Each year I have a favorite plug to use from the surf in Montauk, NY (last year it was yellow darters, the year before that, 6" chicken scratch bombers). After this past Saturday fishing in Montauk it's the Super Strike Needlefish. I have always carried them but have never really used them with great success. In the last month I have been outfished by two different people using needlefish right next to me so I decided to fish with nothing else last weekend. I had always heard people say that if you are not bored fishing a needlefish then you are not doing it right. What they are refering to is the slow straight retreive that is most popular with this plug. Before I went out I did a bit of research as to what colors were best (gold/white & green/white worked for me) for where I fish and any other tricks that I could find. Let me give you a hint;) if you have not read Zeno Hromin's book The Art of Surfcasting with Lures go buy it and read the chapter on needlefish (actually read and re-read the whole thing, you will learn A LOT). When a slow and steady retreive was not working I would simply stick my pointing finger out so that the line would hit it. This subtle flick of the line did the trick almost every time (...that's a trick I learned from Long Island surf fishing guide Bill Wetzel).
