Montana’s Salmon Fly hatch is considered one of the world’s greatest angling occasions, not only for the quality of fishing, but also for the experience; trout fishing at its finest, exuding its’ most primordial essence. Coming from numerous confirmed reports, the Salmon Fly has once again reared its gnarly head on the Big Hole, and begun its annual journey north. Though not yet in full swing, anglers on the Big Hole have reported epic days so familiar and innately bound to the incursion of the Salmon Fly. The predicted warm weather of the weekend, and hopefully, the final coming of summer will help to trigger the widespread spawn of the hatch itself. Though just as completely unpredictable as any other entomological hatch, the Salmon Fly should work its way up to the Lower Madison by around June 25th, and on to the Gallatin and Upper Madison by the first of July. A slow start to the season will soon give way to a happily awaited explosion of absolute aquatic chaos.
Floated the stretch from Divide to Melrose yesterday, Sunday 22Jun.
Salmonfly hatch was occurring from the mouth of the canyon north of Melrose to Maidenrock. Had not yet reached the Divide launch point.
