Calling All Fish

CallingallfishI read a crazy article this morning about a group of researchers at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) at Wood's Hole, Massachusetts, who are testing a plan to train fish to catch themselves by using a sound broadcast to attract them into a net.

They hope to release fish into the open ocean, where they would grow to market size, before enticing them into an underwater cage to be harvested when they hear a tone that signals feeding time. MORE

Fly Fishing Film Tour NYC part 2

Picture61734732A quick note for all of you attending (or thinking about attending) tonights Fly Fishing Film Tour.  I cant say enough about the quality of filmmaking in all of the featured clips, especially AEG Media's Mongolia piece.  Come early and get a seat and enjoy the show.

Alert from Stripers Forever

Americanshad

In an email from .....Stripers Forever
we have read few things more disturbing than the New York Department of Environmental Conservation  (DEC)  recent decision to eliminate all recreational harvest of American shad from the Hudson River while continuing to allow a commercial shad fishery and gill netting to continue.  This effective privatization of the shad resource should make the hair stand up on the back of the neck of every person who believes that recreational fishing for personal food is a far more inherent right of citizenship than being able to sell fish commercially, and who also believes it is time to get all gill nets out of the Hudson.

This link to the SF website will take you to a letter that we have sent to both NY Governor David Paterson and Commissioner Pete Grannis of the NYDEC.

Vermont Fishing - Porta Brace

Portabrace_2I'm always looking for references to fishing in everyday life, especially unexpected ones like the following:

I recently purchased a few bags (CBA-HVX200, CS-DV4U, PB-2400F) from Porta Brace for my Panasonic  AG-HVX200.  If you're not in some sort of film/TV/video related field you've probably never heard of them but if you are, then you know they are the absolute gold standard for protective gear and cases for your camera/film equipment.

In one of the cases I noticed a card (pictured) of a guy holding two huge fish.  The card was from the shipping team and  stated that "My teammates and I are committed to constantly improving the quality and performance of our cases.  To do so we welcome your feedback...etc.  That's great! (If you read this blog you know how much I love great customer service).  Anyway, on the back of the card it says the following:
Team: Shipping
Years at PortaBrace: 15
Total Years Craftsmanship: 15
Favorite Case: DVO-2U
Favorite Company Luncheon Dish: Greek Salad
Favorite Thing About Vermont: FISHING!
Favorite PortaBrace Charity: Second Chance Animal Shelter

I love it!  Fishermen are everywhere!  Ok, so now when is Porta Brace going to come out with some fishing bags?

Mike Iaconelli - Fishing on The Edge

515d0znt49l_ss500_I recently finished Fishing on The Edge by Mike Iaconelli.  It's a few years old so this may be old news to some of you but for those who have not read it, it may be worth a look.  It's the first book I've read on the subject of professional bass fishing so I'm not sure how it ranks in the category, but I liked it.  It's an interesting insight into the life of one of the top guys on the tour.  He goes into great detail about how he prepares for a tournament as well as some basics on patterns and what lures to use.  Mike is obviously a very colorful character and has done a lot to bring attention to the sport.  One criticism would be that he spends too much time focusing on the downward spiral of his marriage.  I would have preferred to hear much less of that and way more tournament details and insight or anecdotes on the other pros, etc.
