Disappointing and frustrating weekend of fishing. I got a late start on Friday night so did not think I was going to be up for a night session, so despite the weather forecast I planned for some sight fishing on Saturday. Well for anyone out on the East end of Long Island Saturday was pretty much a wash out. It was pouring for a better part of the day. While sight fishing was not an option I still wanted to hit the flats so I geared up and hit a flat near Three Mile Harbor. It was an incoming tide (mid tide) with a light East wind. The water was full of weed in close but looked OK 5 feet out. I walked and walked and eventually hit the inlet where I saw a few birds picking at bait on the opposite side out of casting range. I did not see a single fish or any bait on my side which was surprising. I made the long walk back to may car and thought I would try a spot that I was told had fish earlier. Once at the new spot (Accononack area) I was encouraged to find clean water and some nice looking pockets. I made a few casts with an epoxy eel but felt the need to switch to something a little bigger. I grabbed for my fly box, but it was GONE. Not good news as it held all of my flats flies plus a few other standbys. I searched the area I was in as well as the one I had just left and came up empty. If someone finds them give me shout....Until then its back to the tying bench to gear up for the coming weekend.
