I started out the season on Saturday April 28th...Fished a spot in Southampton that I had never been to before but based on a tip I decided to check out the Heady Creek area.  Fishing a spot for the first time can be tricky. It often takes a few trips or daytime scouting mission to figure it out.  When those options aren't possible I usually turn to Google and search the area as well as check out the satellite pictures from Google Earth.  I was the first one to arrive at the spot at about 4:30 followed by another about 30 seconds later.  Very nice guy.  Anyway, high tide was 6:25AM and not long after it started going out I had two small bass on chartreuse clousers fished very slowly in the current.  I saw two other fish caught, both on rubber shads.  I did not make it out the next morning as the later tide did not fit the days schedule (especially for SMALL bass).  May can be a great time for LARGE so here we go.

"Do you have the fly rod in the shot?"

Why is it that when fly fishermen have pictures taken of their catch they insist upon have the fly rod in the picture too.  Is it really that big of a deal that you caught it with a fly rod?  Do those same fishermen hold their spinning rod & reel in the picture too.  I have been guilty of the above too but am not sure why.  In this picture I must have wanted in there so bad that I stuck in in my mouth because the fish was too big to hold both.  Pretty silly.  I think this year I will make an effort to leave all tackle out of the picture!

New World Record Mako

A 1,063-pound mako shark hooked close to shore in the Gulf of Mexico is being investigated as a possible world fishing record.  After the shark died, it took eight men to pull it aboard the Mother Lode and take it to Destin.  The registered weight of 1,063 pounds makes the catch eligible for the world record in the 30-pound line class for a short-fin mako. The class record is a 997-pound, 11-ounce shark caught in Sidney, Australia, in 1995. The largest mako recorded in the all-tackle division was a 1,221 pounder caught in Massachusetts in 2001.

A total of 925 applications were received and reviewed by the IGFA world records department in 2006. Of those, 670 were approved for the year. The total number of fish record categories stands at 9,490.

This video was added to youtube 12 hours ago at the time of this post. All I can say is you gotta hear the music. Its hilarious. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be, and no offense to the filmmaker but wow is it dramatic. This is a good video to watch first thing.

Fly-fishing Contributes Millions to Valley Economy

The valley's 11 fly-fishing outfitters are gearing up for spring and hoping for a banner summer season. Fly-fishing accounted for $857.3 million in retail sales nationwide in 2004 (the latest study), with the Rockies accounting for 27.9 percent of sales, according to the Leisure Trends Group. Five percent of those sales occurred between April and September.
I would guess that saltwater fly fishing accounts for the most retail sales dollars.   Im looking forward to the latest US Fish and Wildlife report do out later this year.  I'm guessing the number of anglers will stay the same but retail dollars will increase.
