Go Fish NA Update - Another fish on the board

Our bait traveling on the northern most route has seen some action and is on to the next angler.  Jason Meade sent us this pic.  The fish he landed with the AR lure was actually gut hooked with a rubber worm.  He removed the worm and the AR lure and sent the fish on its way!

Gettin' Jiggy Wit It - The Fleyes of Bob Popovics'

After about 2 years of not tying I was back at the vise this past weekend.  As you may have read in my blog a few months ago, I decided this past winter that I was going "Back Where I Belong" ... So, if I'm going to be fly fishing more I'm going to need some flies... and for better or worse, I decided to only fish ones that I tie.  When I first got serious about tying, I bought Bob Popovics book Pop Fleyes and the jiggy immediately became my go to fly.  It's simple (and I mean really simple) to tie and can be tweaked to mimic just about anything.  (Most of the time I tie it exactly as shown in Popovic's book but once when I went to meet bob, he showed me how you can tie a wider profile Jiggy by tying down (up actually) the shank.  This is a great tweak for the jiggy!).  So, without even thinking about it, the first fly I tied this weekend was a Jiggy... pictured below in black/purple for fishing back bays at night. 

If you don't know Popovics' flies or have not been at the vise in awhile and are looking for some inspiration I do recommend that you check it out.  After you tie a few dozen jiggies, next should be his BUCKTAIL deceiver and don't forget Bob's Banger.  Again, there are endless variations for both of these flies and they too are very easy and fast to tie.

Where are the big fish?

The above is a fairly common fishing scenario along the striper coast.... I'm sure most of you have fished in similar areas.  This inlet is on the bay side (ie not open ocean).  The obvious time to fish places like this is during an outgoing tide when the bait is being flushed out.  I often fish inlets like this at night as that's usually when the bass are feeding (seems like mostly bluefish during the day).  I've seen many big fish in the areas surrounding places like this but the only fish that seem to be actively feeding (at least the ones I can hear popping) are all small.  Is it that the bigger less aggressive fish are hanging out of the fast water? Are they deeper?  How would you fish this?

Grip Studs - The unboxing

Colin Scott from Grip Studs reached out to me in March and asked if I would be interested in testing and reviewing their surf fishing studs.  I of course jumped at the chance but sadly I have not been able to get out and test them yet, but because I'm so intrigued with them I thought I'd share some photos and initial thoughts.... and I promise I'll be back with a full field tested review ASAP.  In the meantime, check out there site www.gripstuds.com

Just by looking at them, there is little question that they will work.  My main concern is how will they hold up after a 30 minute walk one way across the rocks of Montauk to where I like to fish?  Stay tuned!

Bon Chovie - Bon Burger - Best Fish Sandwich!

As much as I love finding fish, I really love finding good food.   To that end...I had the pleasure of chowing down on the most delicious fish sandwich yesterday in DUMBO.  Created by the the folks at Bon Burger part of the already popular Bon Chovie (get it?) brand.  While waiting for my food I asked Neill Holland, who happens to be the owner with his wife Renae, if he fished... His answer "hell yeah"....
